Visa-Free Travel Deal in the Works Between China and Singapore
China and Singapore are in talks about a visa-free travel deal arrangement to boost arrivals from the city-state.
Singapore had 3.6 million Chinese visitors in 2019. This is far more than any country, and the total spent combined by these visitors was S$4.1 billion. With many locals in Singapore speaking Mandarin, it’s easy for mainland Chinese to find their way around the country.
Citizens of both countries have been waiting for the visa-free travel deal eagerly. The last few years have seen more Chinese nationals keen on investment in Singapore, especially in the luxury property estate sector. However, leaders of both countries also share a concern regarding the deal.
Travellers from China currently need a visa to visit Singapore. But Singaporeans visiting China don’t need to apply for a visa if they’re staying for up to 15 days after China opened its borders and relaxed many of its anti-COVID-19 requirements. However, with Singapore unable to avail of such a facility, there is overcrowding at the Chinese Visa Application Centre in Singapore.
