Getting to Know the Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry (METI)
The Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry (METI) is the Singapore government ministry responsible for the country’s economic growth, its trade relations with the world, the development of its industries and, increasingly, its energy supply. The ministry took this name on 1 October 2026, when the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) was renamed. The new name reflects a growing focus on energy, which the Government regards as vital to Singapore’s economic competitiveness and future.
METI’s stated mission is to drive productivity-led growth, safeguard and expand Singapore’s economic space, and build a future-ready economy where firms thrive, so as to create good jobs and opportunities for Singaporeans.
What METI Oversees
The ministry’s work is organised into three broad areas:
- Trade and international economic relations – Singapore’s network of Free Trade Agreements, Digital Economy Agreements and Green Economy Agreements, its strategic economic partnerships, and its part in regional and international platforms that support open, rules-based trade.
- Industry – investment promotion, enterprise development, Singapore’s position as a tourism and lifestyle hub, economic resilience, and research and innovation, delivered together with its statutory boards.
- Energy and carbon – working with the Energy Market Authority (EMA) to keep Singapore’s energy supply secure, sustainable and cost-competitive while the economy moves to low-carbon sources. Current priorities include low-carbon electricity imports, solar energy, building capabilities in newer options such as nuclear and hydrogen, carbon capture for industry, and the use of carbon credits.
Before the renaming, the ministry had already taken steps such as constructing a second LNG terminal, centralising gas procurement for the power sector, and deploying solar energy on rooftops and reservoirs.

Departments under the Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry (METI)
METI has two government departments:
- Singapore Department of Statistics (DOS) – the National Statistical Office, which provides statistics and statistical services to support decision-making.
- National Space Agency of Singapore (NSAS) – established on 1 April 2026 to lead Singapore’s national space ambitions. It took over the work of the former Office for Space Technology & Industry (OSTIn).
Statutory Boards under the Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry (METI)
Nine statutory boards come under METI’s purview. Their work covers research and innovation, the energy market, enterprise development, industrial infrastructure and tourism, among others:
- Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR)
- Economic Development Board (EDB)
- Enterprise Singapore
- JTC Corporation (JTC)
- Singapore Tourism Board (STB)
- Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore (CCS)
- Energy Market Authority (EMA)
- Hotels Licensing Board (HLB)
- Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC)
How Businesses Deal with METI
Most companies come into contact with METI through its agencies rather than the ministry itself. Enterprise Singapore works with companies to build capabilities, innovate and expand overseas. EDB promotes investment and develops industries in manufacturing and internationally tradeable services. JTC develops industrial infrastructure, CCS administers Singapore’s competition and consumer protection laws, and EMA works to ensure a reliable and secure energy supply. Registering and maintaining a company, by contrast, is handled by the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA), which is not part of the METI family.
