Medical and Hospitalization Leave in Singapore Along with the Rules and Entitlement
You will have an entitlement to both paid outpatient sick leave and paid hospitalization leave if you fulfil the following requirements:
- Must be covered under the Employment Act
- You have worked with your employer for at least 3 months
- You have notified or tried informing your employer within 48 hours of your absence
Sick Leave in Singapore
Your paid sick leave entitlement depends on the length of your employment with your current employer. The paid outpatient sick leave entitlement to be up to 14 days and 60 days for paid hospitalization leave.
In order to qualify for paid outpatient sick leave, you must be certified to be unfit for work by a medical practitioner registered under the Medical Registration Act or Dental Registration Act.
Pro-Rated Sick Leave in Singapore
As a new employee, your sick leave will be pro-rated based on the length of your service. An employee with 6 months or more months of service will get the full entitlement.
If your length of service is between 3 to 6 months, your pro-rated entitlement is as follow:
- 3 months of work – 5 available sick leave days
- 4 months of work – 8 available sick leave days
- 5 months of work – 11 available sick leave days
- 6 or more – 14 available sick leave days
Hospitalization Leave in Singapore
It is for an employee to rest and recuperate. It is to cover them for the period that a hospital doctor deems than an employee requires hospital care. To qualify for paid hospitalization leave, an employee must be:
- Whether warded or underwent day surgery
- When the employee is not hospitalised and requires bed rest
- When the employee requires rest or further medical attention for the condition after the discharge from the hospital to recuperate
Other specific circumstance such as Quarantine Orders would qualify an employee for it.
Hospitalization Leave Duration in Singapore
As a new employee, your paid hospitalization leave will be pro-rated based on the length of your service. An employee with 6 months or more months of service will get the full entitlement.
If your length of service is between 3 to 6 months, your pro-rated entitlement is as follow:
- 3 months of work – 15 available days
- 4 months of work – 30 available hospitalization leave days
- 5 months of work – 45 available days
- 6 or more – 60 available hospitalization leave days
Please note that the number of hospitalization leave is inclusive of the outpatient sick leave.
Example:
If you have already taken 7 days of sick leave, the number of hospitalization leave you can take is 53 days.
60 days – 7 days = 53 days
