The Startup Ecosystem in Singapore is Among the Seventh Best in the World
According to this year’s Global Startup Ecosystem Report (GSER) by Startup Genome and the Global Entrepreneurship Network, Singapore now has Asia’s top startup ecosystem, surpassing Beijing.
The island city ranked seventh in this year’s global startup ecosystem rankings, rising one spot from a year ago and above Beijing, dropping to eighth.
Singapore surpassed other Asian cities, including Shanghai (11th), Tokyo (10th), and Seoul (9th), although it still trails Boston (6th).
Based on available historical data for the research, Silicon Valley has remained the world’s top startup ecosystem for the past five years. New York and London remained tied for second place.
According to GSER research, Singapore’s startups generated US$144 billion in ecosystem value between 1 July 2021 and 31 December 2023, indicating a 27% compound annual growth rate over the preceding two years. Ecosystem value gauges the economic impact startups produce, which is determined by subtracting startup valuations from exit values.
Singapore’s Increasing Role in Thriving Ecosystem
Atsushi Taira, co-founder and chairman of The Edgeof and managing director of Mistletoe Singapore, highlighted Singapore’s pivotal role in the Pan Asia Startup Ecosystem hub. He emphasised how the city-state brings together visionary founders and investors to advance Deep Tech- and AI-driven- innovations, cementing its position as a leading force in the region.
Despite the challenges, Singapore’s startup ecosystem is thriving, with over 4,500 tech startups, 400 venture capital firms, and 240 accelerators, venture builders, and incubators. This growth is a testament to the potential for startups to flourish in our city-state, inspiring a similar spirit of innovation and determination among those who call Singapore home.
GSER examines the most recent and developing market trends while ranking the top 40 ecosystems worldwide.
