Best University in Singapore – The Leading Global Universities
Singapore is not only famous as the economic powerhouse in Asia but is also home to leading global universities. The rise of the National University of Singapore (NUS) to the top of the QS University Rankings: Asia in 2019 is the strong evidence of Singapore’s solid position as a regional education leader. Nanyang Technological University (NTU) reigns the third place in the rankings this year, solidifying the reputation of Singapore’s universities as among the region’s best university.
The reign of NUS and NTU at the coveted top spot of the regional tables reflects the Singaporean government’s commitment to funding a strategic, gradual expansion of its education system. In fact, both NUS and NTU have benefitted from major government investment in research, which has helped the universities to excel and emerge as the region’s top players in higher education.
National University of Singapore (NUS)
With a history stretching a hundred years, NUS is the oldest higher education institution in the country with a long history of development and reshuffle. NUS is currently the 11th best university in the world university rankings and the top best university in Asia’s ranking with over 38000 students from more than 100 countries. As the leader in the Asia ranking, NUS is home to 17 faculties that offer over 370 different degrees, ranging from bachelor, master, doctoral, and graduate diplomas. The prominent alumni of NUS include numerous Singaporean political elite like Prime Ministers Goh Chok Tong and Lee Kuan Yew and President Benjamin Henry Sheares.
Nanyang Technological University (NTU)
Founded in 1981, NTU is another highly ranked publically funded university in Singapore. With its main campus Yunnan Garden spanning over 2km² and 16 halls of residence (where previously an Olympic Village), NTU’s campus is said to have the biggest on-campus residence infrastructure in Singapore. As of now, NTU has a record of 33,000 students across different fields including engineering, science, business, humanities, arts, social sciences, and education, and has a joint medical school with Imperial College London. In addition to this, NTU is committed to extensive research in different fields that include engineering, business, humanities, arts and social sciences and medicine. The strategic partnership between NTU and some of the world’s leading technology companies (for example Alibaba, Rolls-Royce, BMW, Volvo, Delta Electronics, and Singtel) have benefitted many areas of researches including artificial intelligence, data science, robotics and so on.
Singapore as the Regional Education Hub
As a highly competitive knowledge-based economy, Singapore places extra attention and efforts on enhancing the quality of higher education in the country. In the quest to becoming an education hub, the Singaporean government has invited foreign universities to set up local campuses in the country to provide more higher education programs.
